Techniques: Using Canon DSLR Cameras

All of the footage for CUTV is shot on Canon DLSR cameras in combination with Zeiss or Canon prime lenses.

It might at first seem an unusual choice to use DSLR's but the quality of the image is first class, courtesy of the combination of large digital sensors and prime lenses.

We are using:

Canon 5d mk3, Canon 7d and Canon 550d's

Zeiss 35mm prime, Zeiss 50mm prime and a number of Canon prime lenses.

We monitor the footage in real time using LG monitors connected via HDMI which provides a very useful full screen image.

The origin of the facility to shoot video on a DSLR (essentially stills) camera emanates from Canon's receptiveness to user feedback.

Photo journalists requested the option to shoot short bursts of video footage in addition to all of the refinements of their photographic needs provided by the cameras. Canon enabled this facility and thus started a small revolution in options for film makers.
